An inverter converts direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). It can be built as a standalone device that supplies AC loads or function as an emergency power source for AC loads, where the energy source consists of separately rechargeable batteries.
The inverter can also be part of a larger, verified AC application, such as a power supply circuit or UPS. In this case, the inverter’s DC input is either from rectified grid electricity within the unit under normal conditions or from a battery in the event of a power outage.
In addition to the DC input, the inverter may also have an AC input connection. In this case, grid power can be supplied to the load via the inverter. Under normal conditions, the AC input is used, which is filtered and supplied to the load via the AC output. In the event of a power outage, the system switches to using the DC input, which is connected to rechargeable battery banks via rectifiers. Inverters can also be configured differently if the application requires it.
